Ever wanted to putt like Jordan Spieth? The New York Times recently published a short piece on Jordan Spieth’s putting; the headline being putting is a head game. As we all know Jordan is one of, if not the best putter in the world. We only have to look back to this year’s Open Championship, to see what a good putter he is. Jordan talks about how putting is mainly a head game, after his coach, Cameron McCormick, looked at all the technical aspects of his stroke. For example, they have videos of his putting stroke when he is putting well and isn’t putting well. They have all Jordan’s SAM Putting lab results and putting stats from the last 3 years. Jordan makes a very noticeable statement, quoting that: “A couple of my best putting weeks, if you dissected the stroke down, are actually very different strokes. “From Tour Championship in '15 to Masters in '15, they are very different strokes. You wouldn't necessarily look and see by the naked eye, but if you looked at the intricacies of the stroke and the way the putter travelled, they were actually tremendously different. But the one similarity was I was consistently holing putts. So even with the stroke being off, my face control to that stroke was the same each time, and that's what I'm trying to get is that consistency level up. I've been trying to make my stroke perfect with the perfect consistency, and there is really no point,” he said. “If you're looking at a spot, you know you're set up there and you can consistently hit it there, then it doesn't really matter what the stroke looked like. So, in other words, it's there, it's just a matter of trusting that it's there, seeing a couple go in, and then the hole starts to look bigger. “You go through spurts here and there, and I went through it in '13 and '14, and even '15, when I wasn't making as many putts for a couple weeks. And you go through those kinds of spurts. The hole looks a little smaller until you give yourself enough opportunities. If I hit 15 greens, I have to make a couple of them. You roll the ball near the hole that many times, if its luck, one of them is going to bounce in. Or you just believe that's a good stroke, and the hole starts to look bigger.” As stated previously, putting can be a head game!” To summarise, you have the best putter in the world, talking about how your putting stroke doesn’t necessarily have to be technically sound, what you have to do is fully trust and have confidence in your putting stroke, believing you’re going to putt the ball, to where you are aiming. |
