Centre of Pressure throughout the Golf Swing

Lately there have been a lot of the golf articles, where coaches have talked about tour player’s weight shift, throughout their swings and the forces they use from the ground. One of the talking points is the way they use the ground, in order to generate swing speed and power. As a result huge distances gained, but ultimately greater control of the ball flight.

A common mistake in amateur is incorrect weight shift, on the backswing and the downswing. This leads to loss of distance and inconsistent ball striking.

Coaches have been looking at where tour player’s centre of pressure is, throughout the backswing and downswing is it more in the toes or more in the heels? The research that has been carried out has found, the most consistent ball strikers on tour, the centre of pressure throughout their swing goes back into the right heel, on the backswing, then straight through to their left heel on the downswing. The longer hitters on tour generally have their centre of pressure in the right heel on the backswing, then a quick shift into their left toe, on the downswing, then into the left heel, not noticeable by the human eye.

We now have the equipment, to your weight shift and centre of pressure throughout your golf swing. Achieved by our BodiTraks pressure mat as seen below. This allows us to compare your results before and after, and see how much distance or consistency in ball striking you have gained. One of the benefits to amateurs with correct weight pressures, is a swallowing of the shaft on the downswing, increasing the chance of hitting more in-to-out.

A simple drill for you to try: At address sit back on your heels, you may have to move slightly closer to the ball, due to your weight moving into your heels, the idea whilst swinging is to feel the pressure in your heels, throughout your backswing and downswing, be sure to still turn through the ball, a common fault when placing the weight on the heels, is to not turn! If you are keeping the weight through the heels, your divot should be much shallower, with the feeling of more power, give it a go and let us know if it helps.

Image 1 shows my weight distribution at impact. 77% of the weight is in the right foot (red) and mainly towards the heels (green). Image 2 is at the top of the backswing. As you can see 96% of the weight is in the right foot (red) and 92% in the right toe (green). I need to work on getting my weight in my right heel, at the top of the backswing and more on my left heel at impact to show a better weight shift through impact, giving me more power and consistency.

Turkey Trot 3 Results - 9th /10th December

Congratulations to Mark and Clive Thistleton, a brilliant score of 46 points in last weekend’s Turkey Trot. The highlights of the round included 5 birdies and an eagle on the 7th.

There we 4 couples tied on 45 points, also  outstanding scores, and they were; Paul Horn/Steve Wetherell, Rob Milne/Luaan Graham, Spencer Davies/Richard Wren and Alan Bryan/Martin Clinnick.
