Keep it plane and Simple! Ever wondered why your game is inconsistent? Well one important factor is the club shaft being out of plane angle leading to the inconsistency. Think about this, in your set up position the club is at a certain angle to the ground and this is bespoke to each person, due to body type and set up characteristics, if you could maintain this angle throughout your swing it would surely produce more consistency? As ultimately all you’re trying to do is get back to where you started from A simple method to follow is this, when you swing the club back and you reach a point where the left arm is parallel to the ground, the club shaft should reflect the same angle as it was at address, in turn when your left arm reaches parallel to the ground on the downswing, it should reflect the same angle it was at address, by maintaining these positions throughout your swing the strike will improve, accuracy will improve, distance will be greater and more consistent results. You may argue this theory as players like Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk and Ryan Moore swing on a completely different plane angle on the backswing relative to their start position, although one important aspect is they all reflect the same shaft angle on the downswing as they had at set up! This method is what Tiger Woods adopted when he was coached by Hank Haney, one could argue this was his greatest period due to the control he had of the golf ball and body, winning 6 majors and 31 tour events with a conversion rate of winning over 33% of all tournaments entered! Below are a few images of the club shaft plane angles, one at address, halfway back, half way down and one at impact. |
