Putting like the Masters

I’m pretty sure every golfer on the planet was glued to The Masters last week. One thing that is key when playing Augusta, is not only to hit the right spots on the green, but to putt very well to have a chance of winning. Augusta arguably has the trickiest and fastest greens on the planet when it comes to Masters week.

The winner of the tournament no doubt has putted very well over the four days. At Augusta, pace is so important, as I’m sure you have seen some players have putted into water down to the fact they haven’t go the pace of the greens. So how do the players prepare to make sure they have got the pace of the greens, come day 1 of the tournament?

Drill for pace

A lot of the players putt to a tee before play, the idea is to get the ball to stop as close to the tee as possible. This narrows the focus down to a small target giving a bigger margin for error when putting to a hole, effectively making the hole bigger! This works.

Drills for starting the ball on the right line

A drill you can try to see if you’re getting the right line, is to pick some different length putts and put a tee in the ground at the point you believe the putt is going to break. Then all you have to do is strike the ball towards the tee (break point) from there the ball should track towards the hole, we believe this is one of the most important aspects to holing putts. Once on the course putt to break points not the hole, pick something out in the green that stands out where you believe the ball should roll over (break point), in turn this takes out the tension that builds up in a putting stroke due to focusing too much on the hole!

Sunday Showdown at the Masters

On Sunday at the Masters, the two stand out players (apart from Patrick Reed), were Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth. Rickie shot an excellent -5 and Jordan shot an outstanding -8 par. Patrick Reed took the victory with a final score of -1. We are now going to look what is in all 3 players’ bags.

Jubilee Salver 07/04/18

Congratulations to Phil Merron with the lowest net on Saturday on a score of 66. The other 7 who have qualified for the match play stages of the Jubilee Salver are Mark Rogers, Dan Murray, Rich Gaskin, James Hellyer, Bill John, Darren Wingham and Keiron Baxter. Well done to all of you. Match play draws are now online.

Houldsworth Shield – 14/04/18

Massive congratulations to the winner Bradley Hansler who won with a net score of 60. Bradley who was off an 11 handicap at the time scored a gross level par. His round included 2 birdies and an eagle on the 10th. He won by 8 shots from Mark Stokes in 2nd on a score of 68, Toby Burden in 3rd also on 68 and Phil Andrews in 4th also on 68. Well done to all.

Monday Stableford – 16/04/18

Congratulations to Steve Clapp on winning Monday’s stableford with an excellent score of 40 points. Steve scored a gross score of 3 under par, which included 5 birdies. In 2nd place was Keith Clinnick on a score of 39 points, Mark Ward in 3rd with 38 points, Simon Fuller in 4th also on 38 points and Tony Swain in 5th on 37 points. Well done to all.

Roll Up Entry Monday Medals

As you may be aware you can now enter the Monday Medals after the allocated start times, this allows anyone wishing to play later on in the day to join the competition, players are more than welcome to play in two balls, three or four, simply enter on any touchscreen in the clubhouse.

Please be aware to allow this facility, sign up for allocated start times closes the day before at 23:00, from this time roll up entries are available, if there are slots still available in the start sheet these can still be used but need to be booked by the pro shop, if you have any queries please contact the pro shop.

Are you a V or X?

When it comes to golf balls, there are two questions we hear on an almost daily basis, both concerning Titleist’s Pro V1 and Pro V1x. So we thought we’d take this opportunity to let you all know the answers...

What’s the difference between V and X?
Both of the Pro V1 balls are designed to provide long and short game performance, but there are subtle differences from tee-to-green.

While both feel soft, the Pro V1 is a little softer and has a penetrating flight that delivers more roll from the tee, whereas the Pro V1x feels firmer and flies higher.

Which one should I play?
If it’s a straight shootout between the Pro V1 and Pro V1x, then you’re going to benefit from distance, control and feel either way.

Both models are used on tour by players such as Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, but it really comes down to your personal feel preference and which characteristics suit your game, which we can discuss during a ball fitting.
