The importance of a smooth transition The transition in the golf swing isn’t looked at very much in my opinion, yet it is such an important factor because if your transition from backswing to downswing isn’t good, then you’re never going to hit a good shot. What I mean by a good transition is a smooth downswing triggered by the right body parts moving in sequence. We see a lot of amateur golfers who struggle because of a poor transition. They start their downswing by snatching the club down with their arms, the lower part of the body can’t get out of the way, the result is the club is too far inside or outside. This ultimately leads to pulls, pushes, hooks, and slices, thin and fat shots. So how do you improve your transition? Have a look at the couple of drills below to help your transition. |
Drill 1 You can do this drill by either hitting a ball or not. Firstly make your backswing and then pause at the top for a few seconds, then feel like your lower body unwinds back to the ball and hit through. It is important you feel like you hitting the ball with the turn of your body as this will help you get the correct sequence on the way down, starting with the lower half and then the top half unwinds. |
Drill 2 This drill is the step through drill. What you need to do is start with your feet together, swing to the top of your backswing, pause, and then step forward with your front foot. What you will notice is by stepping forward your lower half unwinds first and you will also notice your arms already starting the downswing without you doing anything other than stepping forward. You can do this drill by either hitting balls or not. I would suggest without a ball first until you get the hang of it, when you feel more comfortable add the golf ball in. |

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: the key to unlocking lower scores lies in improving your short game. Having the correct technique is one part of the journey to achieving this. The other is making sure your wedges are the correct grind and bounce for your swing, as well as having a set of wedges that are evenly gapped to cater for any distance. |

50% of you are like the first graphic If you’re working hard to get your handicap down to single figures, it really will pay off to dedicate more of your practice time to your short game and the shots you need to improve in the scoring zone. As you can see with the graphics above, the wrong wedge set-up can lead to an awkward 35-yard gap and more difficult half shots, which is why we always recommend a gapping session or fitting. With Titleist you have plenty of options, including this popular Vokey SM7 wedge, which comes in nine different lofts between 46° and 62°. It means whether you’re looking for a two, three or four wedge set-up in your bag, we can get your yardages gapped perfectly. |
