In order to stop this, I used two drills. The first was a feeling of keeping his back to the target for as long as possible when starting the downswing, a feeling of starting the downswing slowly also helped him with this. The other thing we did that worked very well is to put a headcover outside and behind the golf ball. Therefore if his club path is from the outside, he will hit the headcover.
