Choosing the correct ball flight This weeks tip is on how to control the ball flight when playing in the windy conditions that we often get at Hayling Golf Club. Below are the key points in order to hit the golf ball low: Club Selection: The most important part of trying to keep the golf ball down is choosing the correct club. If the shot requires a 7 iron but you are strongly into the wind, trying to hit a low 7 iron will still come up short. Instead take a 6/5 iron (depending on the strength of the wind). The less loft on the club will help lower the ball flight and as you will hit the golf ball softer, the ball will have less backspin and will not be affected by the wind as much. Ball Position: In order to keep the golf ball down, it is important to move the golf ball slightly back in your stance. This helps you to strike down on the golf ball a bit more than normal, therefore delofting the club and lowering the ball flight. Swing Length: As mentioned earlier, if you hit the golf ball softer then this will help in lowering the ball flight. Therefore we do not want to be making a full swing, instead a swing that is ¾’s back and through will give you the best chance of hitting the ball low. To help with this, I like players to grip down the club to make it a bit shorter. This helps to shorten the swing and gives more control over the ball flight. Hope this tip helps you to hit the golf ball lower. For more information or help with your game please visit Hayling Professional Shop. |
