Tip of the week

This weeks tip is to help you when playing from uneven lies. When faced with ball above your feet or below your feet, it is very common to strike the ball incorrectly and or miss the target left and right. The simple adjustments below will help you to allow for the affect the slope will have on your swing and help you with what ball flight to expect.

Ball above feet
When the golf ball is above your feet the tendency is for the ball to curve to the left. The greater the slope and the more loft that is on the club will cause the golf ball to go further left. To allow for this, first of all we must aim to the right of our intended target. Secondly, as the ball is nearer to you, it is very easy to hit the ground before the golf ball. The easiest way to make sure this doesn’t happen is to grip down the shaft of the club that you are using. The amount to grip down depends on the severity of the slope, the greater the slope the more you should grip down. It is very easy to loose your balance when the ball is on a slope. Therefore I recommend taking more club than you normally would, for example if you would normally hit a 7 iron then take a 6 iron. Swing the golf club at 75% and concentrate on trying to stay as balanced as possible.

Ball below feet
When the ball is below your feet then the tendency is for the golf ball to curve to the right of the target. It is very common to hit the golf ball thin when faced with this situation. To allow for the golf ball curving to the right, we need to aim to the left of the target. The amount to the left depends on the severity of the slope, greater the slope then aim further left. To help you to not hit the golf ball thin, it is important to flex your knees to get down to the level of the golf ball. The difficulty with this shot is maintining the knee flex during the swing to ensure the club comes back to the same place. To make this easier, take more club than you normally would for the shot and swing at 75%.

I hope this tip helps you when you are faced with a awkward lie out on the golf course.
