Tip of the week
When teaching people with a variety of abilities, there is a common fault that many of them believe that they have, “lifting their head”. I usually hear this after a player has topped the ball or thinned the ball very low. This is not the issue and trying to not lift your head can lead to many other swing faults.
The more common fault is a loss of posture during the swing, making it very difficult to return the club correctly to the golf ball. The loss of posture is usually where a players hips move towards the golf ball and the spine straightens. The result is usually an out to in swing path with a poor strike resulting in a loss of distance.
When a player tries to keep their head down, it usually results in the players chin going into their chest and the player trying to stare at the golf ball during the backswing and all the way through the swing. This position results in poor posture to start with and your chin is in the way of your shoulders turning correctly. By keeping your head looking at the ground after you have hit the golf ball, it becomes impossible to turn through the golf ball, resulting in loss of power and loss of control of the club face.
What to do Instead - If you struggle with topping the ball or thinning the golf ball make sure you are in a good athletic posture to start with. Make sure your chin is away from your chest, knees flexed a small amount and tilting forwad from your hips and arms hanging straight below your shoulders. During the swing your aim is to try and keep this posture as much as possible. A good drill to help feel this is to make some practice swings at home without a golf club.Take your golf posture with your backside against a wall, make a backswing and through swing and try to keep your backside aginst the wall all the way through. This will help you feel what it is like to remain in your posture. The other important thing to try is allowing your head to release towards the target. Once the club has made contact with the ball you want to feel that your head is going to start looking down the fairway and towards your target, this allows you to turn through the golf ball correctly. Two professionals that make this move really well are Annika Sorenstam and Henrik Stenson. |

When you're playing golf during the winter, your shots don't carry as far or roll out as much as they would in the summer. It's just a fact of life. It also means that judging distances to the green becomes a lot trickier, with many amateur golfers coming up a little short with approach shots. Have you noticed this trend in your own game recently? |
| Step 1: Gapping session Well, if you come and see us for a gapping session, we can work out the exact yardage that you hit each club in your bag, making finding the green more often a reality. However, you won't realise the benefits of knowing your distances unless you know how far you need to hit the ball, something that a Garmin GPS device will certainly help with. |
| Step 2: Garmin GPS device The Approach S10 is the perfect solution to your yardage woes. Featuring a high-sensitivity GPS receiver, the S10 will give you the distance data you need to play better golf (front, middle and back as well as hazards and doglegs). This technology is there to help you, so make sure you're taking full advantage like most other golfers are! |
