A very common fault that I see in the golf swing is not controlling the clubface correctly and as a result hitting the golf ball with either an open or closed clubface. This will produce a shot that does not travel consistently towards the intended target and make strike and distance control very difficult to judge.

The first thing to check is your grip - The majority of golfers hold the club how it feels comfortable but this is not often correct. The key points to check is that the club is sitting in the correct part of your hand, where the fingers meet the palm on both your right and left hand. The other thing to check is that when you look down on your grip, you should be able to see the first two knuckles on the top hand. On your bottom hand, the ‘v’ created between your thumb and index finger should point towards your right shoulder (for a right handed golfer, left shoulder for a left handed golfer). This will give a neutral grip.

The other fault I often see happens in how the players take the club back away from the ball. The common fault is the player trying to keep the clubface pointing at the ball, resulting in a closed clubface. This position will affect the plane of the golf swing (usually making it to steep) and the player will then have to try and manipulate the club during the swing to hit a straight shot. Practice taking the club back away from the ball and stopping at waist height. At the point the club should be in line with your hands and the clubface should match the angle of your spine.

By ensuring the grip and takeaway are spot on, your control over the clubface will be far greater resulting in more consistent straight shots and lower scores.
