Tip of the week
This weeks coaching tip is on putting and more specifically controlling the speed when putting. As the greens get a little slower during the winter months it can be very difficult to get the ball to the hole and when you try to hit the ball that bit harder, you lose control of the direction and miss the putt either right or left of the hole.
When trying to hit the ball harder it is very important that you are still striking the ball out of the middle of the putter, this will allow you to still have control and feel for the distance. To ensure you are hitting putts out the middle, practice hitting putts with a tee peg at the heel and toe of the putter. If you can hit putts without hitting the tee pegs then you will know that you are striking the ball out of the middle of the putter.
When trying to hit the ball harder, it is a common mistake to make the stroke quicker. This results in a short and jerky stroke that is hard to control. Instead of this, concentrate on keeping a good tempo and control the distance by altering the length of the backswing. For example, the longer the putt, simply make a bigger backswing. When making a bigger backswing, it is easy to allow your body to sway and move around during the stroke. This makes it difficult to control the strike. Therefore focus on trying to stay very still when putting to ensure you strike the long putts as good as the short putts.
On very long and slow putts in the winter, simply making a longer backswing may not be enough to get the ball to the hole. In this case, ensure that you have a light grip pressure and allow the wrists to break slightly in the backswing and allow the putter head to release trhough impact. This use of the wrists will give you a bit more speed, it is harder to control the direction so ensure that you practice this before trying it on the golf course.

We all want to enjoy playing golf, and a big part of this is lowering our handicap. Yes, there will be times when your game isn't up to scratch and you go up .1 a few times in a row, but there'll also be times when all of the puzzle pieces fit and your handicap tumbles. |
What does your graph look like? As the year comes to an end, it's important to take stock and examine where you can improve your game going into the new year. There might be several areas that you want/need to work on, or maybe just two or three finer details that will take your game to the next level. |
Whatever those areas are, we're here to help. We can identify the key reasons you're not shooting the scores you want, as well as devise a personalised winter coaching plan to help iron out those faults and get you paying your best golf. So, if you want to see your handicap tumble in 2019, come down to the shop for a chat - you've got nothing to lose and everything to gain. |
